Nikolayeva was a mixture of good and
not so good. She could be a bit pedantic,
but when she was "on" she could play very
nicely. Some pieces just didn't bring out the
best in her.
Can you point out (preferably with examples)
which pieces brought out the best in her?
BTW I was in the audience at her last concert
in San Francisco on November 13, 1993 when
she experienced a brain haemorrhage on stage
while performing Shosty's op. 87. One wonders
why so many pianists experience cerebral or
cardiac events while performing. Curiously, I
never heard of fiddlers colapsing on stage.
Can anyone offer a tentative explanation?
