Just to illustrate my earlier point that
    Nikolayeva was severely retarded,
here is a short compilation of
    BMW 1031 interpretations:

This is just exaggeration for the sake of effect -

    Obviously. Exaggeration is not unlawful.
Freedom of speech entails freedom to
exaggerate, as well as to understate.
    It is an individual choice.

If one may however respectfully submit,
this is the visceral impression one gets
from listening to her. In this sense it is
not exaggeration to say she sounds as
    if she were severely retarded.

Nikolayeva was a mixture of good and
not so good. She could be a bit pedantic,
but when she was "on" she could play very
nicely. Some pieces just didn't bring out the
    best in her.

Can you point out (preferably with examples)
which pieces brought out the best in her?

BTW I was in the audience at her last concert
in San Francisco on November 13, 1993 when
she experienced a brain haemorrhage on stage
while performing Shosty's op. 87. One wonders
why so many pianists experience cerebral or
cardiac events while performing. Curiously, I
never heard of fiddlers colapsing on stage.
Can anyone offer a tentative explanation?

Richter. His Bach was much worse than Nikolayeva.
