Law, religion and languages have practical uses. So does popular culture, music and other forms of art. One does not have to stick one's neck out for them. They take care of themselves as long as they are relevant.

At the academic level, philology, philosophy, religion (mythology, rituals), international relations, gender/women/multicultural, regional studies, etc., etc., are specializations of history.
In the early 20th century, many believed that the past could be a mirror of modern society. These days, only nerds care.

Some studies try to be(come) relevant by developing into empirical social sciences: international relations, gender, women's and multicultural studies. Often they do not rise above the level of an ideology provided with statistics. They are popular as
creators of certain norms (in the guise of values).

As long as taught subjects in schools include climate change I'm easy about cultural studies.

Music and drama will always exist outside of schools and universities, though classical music and theatre without conservatoires would be difficult.

Climate was not a subject in my day. There were almanacs that predicted what to expect. My grandchildren have been taught about the consequences, but don't seem to care about climate change. The subject has been hijacked by activists - and for reasons
unclear to me, they feel no affinity with those groups.

Music and theater will always exist outside schools and universities, although classical music and theater would be difficult without conservatories.

It was not that difficult at the beginning of the 20th century. By the way, what was the reason for institutionalizing education in music and theatre?
