I listened to 379/i. For me it's too assertive and dramatic -- like they're putting themselves, their virtuosity, to the fore, and playing up the contrasts in the music. The opposite of modest small scale music making. I felt I was confronted with the
instrumental analogue of a pair of divas singing a duet, or a pair of ham actors. Very good hams and prima donnas probably.

    Now listening to Richter/Kagan. That's a relief.

For a long time I would would listen to Mozart sonatas each morning, to start the day. I remember I enjoyed Kaja Danczowska with Kristian Zimerman, and György Pauk with Peter Frankl.

I do not like Frankl and Pauk and I can't imagine I like the other two you mentioned - Zimerman. Richter/Kagan as you mentioned are surely better. I'm actually thinking about purchasing it now. I knew about his recordings with Kagan, but I didn't listen
to them in a long time. Really can't think of anyone being better than Richter/Kagan here.

I think yes, at times maybe, but it's still the recordign of this piece I like the most.

The problem for me is rather his piano tone... it's always very thick and heavy in a way; very "wide". It always hindered me from truly enjoying his playing even when I liked his interpretations. In some of Mozart's Sonatas for violin and piano, and some
Haydn pieces, some movements of Schubert pieces, also some Bach, I like him the most, but I still can't really enjoy him, because of his tone... I like Schnabel's, Gould's or Rubinstein's tone much more.

I think Zimerman is lame in this piece btw.

Schnabel - Mozart Rondo in A minor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP665A8iA8g

Coarse sound? Neither elegant nor delicate?

It's actually very difficult for me to describe why I don't like Richter's tone. Thick was certainly a wrong word to describe it because of multiple reasons. Just don't like his tone...
