The word that describes this performance perfectly is “stodgy”
In fact lots of Richter’s playing is stodgy.

Is there no lightness in Mendelssohn’s music?
The total denotes seriousness, not heaviness.

    It’s Mendelssohn via Brahms.

Your comments would make perfect sense for
a lot of Mendelssohn's music, but not for the
Serieuses. This is Mendy at his darkest. Only
Richter manages to extract a sense of total
    terror from this work.

This is one of a very short list of works I know
intimately and listen to quite frequently. FWIW I
must have heard more than 100 performances,
some quite good (e.g. Freire or Volodiya), and I
keep going back to Richter's for its darkness,
power and relentless momentum. I his hands
the Serieuses no longer sound to my ears like
"variations", but rather like one dark ballade.

Obviously, this is my taste, and I do not intend
to spoil anyone else's enjoyment of a different
    version.

Much more broadly, I've seen more than one person here attempt to
claim equivalence between someone posting the occasional OT/obnoxious

But complaining only makes at least one of them act MORE obnoxiously,

But complaining only makes at least one of them act MORE obnoxiously,
as every "challenge" must be "answered" by asserting further ownership here....

There's a great deal of obsessive behavior among some participants here.

By the way, the principle of equivalence is at the heart of the
theory of general relativity. Are you challenging Einstein?

In string playing there is a difference between C# and Db, depending where you're coming from.

    Russell's Paradox.

    Adorno:

"Very often, a thought is not refuted by its contradictions, but the contradictions are precisely its truth. In the contradictions this is evident in the thing itself, on what the thinking is aimed at which is not exhausted in the logicalness. The most
convenient and naive, namely always a form originating from our habits of thinking, to practice criticism on philosophies, fixes them on so-called contradictions.

It is necessary to consider very carefully whether we are concerned with inconsistencies of thought, or merely with intellectual contradictions, or whether in these contradictions the inadequacy of such a theorem to reality, or even of contradictions
within the structure of the thing itself are shown."

"Beauty today can have no other measure except the depth to which a work resolves contradictions. A work must cut through the contradictions and overcome them, not by covering them up, but by pursuing them."

"A successful work of art is not one which resolves contradictions in a spurious harmony, but one which expresses the idea of harmony negatively by embodying the contradictions, pure and uncompromised, in its innermost structure."

I do not think Mr Russell is German
enough to be lecturing me about
    seriousness. Gauss maybe, or
    Boltzmann.
    Racist.

    Okay, but not antisemitic.
