• 257 CDs set of Abbado coming out in June: big box sets

257 CDs. Big Box set for Abbado.

What about an Ormandy stereo set?

How about reprinting the sets that were deleted immediately
after release? Not everybody gets to buy the set they want,
because they might know about the set in the brief time
it's available or not have yet realized they want the set.

After all the complete big name box sets come out, we can
start on massive box sets of non big name artists.

Next we can come out with label centered box sets in
original jackets for the biggest box sets of all.

What about an Ormandy stereo set?

Well, that's a question for Sony and has nothing to do with Universal. Give Sony some credit- their mega-box sets are generally the best out there, if chiefly for the books. I don't know what they have in the hopper, but I'm willing to wait as long as
they keep it up and give us Ormandy at some point.

There are smaller Ormandy sets that have been put out regularly - Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, etc. - so that omission isn't too painful. I've been hoping for the past 20+ years for an E. Power Biggs box, but alas that is likely happening never.

The concept of the mono Ormandy box set is great: completist
collections that are nearly entirely new to CD.
    And it's big!

    E. Power Biggs is especially worth it as most of his stuff is
not on CD. I have an LP that is the same piece played on
something like 16 different organs. There could be a
mastertape for that and it should be transferred without
noise reduction so the different organs stand out from
each other (noise reduction muffles the sound).

    Other long overdue reissues:

Sir Thomas Beecham (most of his recordings have appeared on CD in some form, but never in an integral set).

    Serge Koussevitzky

Erich Leinsdorf (at least his BSO recordings)

Leopold Stokowski (especially the 78 RPM Philadelphia Orchestra recordings)

    Edwin Fischer

    Otto Klemperer

    Beverly Sills:
All her EMI recitals (I think all did appear on CD)
All her Westminster / ABC recitals (some tracks never made it to CD, especially the caballeta to 'O beau pays')
Her complete opera recordings, with the cuts imposed to fit them on to 2 CDs opened up (e.g., Giulio Cesare on RCA, EMI Barbiere)

Lauritz Melchior - complete Victor recordings, including some sides that appeared first on RCA LPs in the 1970s.

    A few miscellaneous things:
Ives choral music with the Gregg Smith Singers from Columbia LPs
The Student Prince with Jan Peerce
The abridged opera sets from the 1940s that were on Odyssey LPs (Carmen with Stevens, Boris with Pinza; were there others?)

Another vote here for Biggs - more Power to them at Sony!

And how about a box for William Steinberg? There was once an EMI box so
how about one from Universal with all of the Command recordings?

And Pau Casals? His conducting is always interesting, and he
participated in many superb chamber recordings. (I know there is an
Eloquence collection - does anyone here have opinions on that?)

Exactly the reason that the BIG Ormandy mono box is the only one, thus far, that I opted to buy. If one has been building a collection of CDs since their introduction and in many cases replacing treasured LPs, the Munch,
Szell, Reiner boxes represented poor value at 75+ % duplication.

Clearly, the big players in the market, i.e. the triopoly of Sony,
Universal, and Warner, have calculated that this strategy is profitable and meets the demand of some collectors.

I’m guessing that they’ve already determined that selling individual
discs from these sets in their simple cardboard sleeves would
jeopardize the sales of the big-box money-makers. A pity.

That still does not excuse Sony’s failure to release single CDs
from their E. Power Biggs holdings or a few smaller boxes built
around sub-categories. I’m eager and willing to order
the Soler Concerti for Two Organs, The Organ in America,
Organs of Spain and Portugal (both a mono and later stereo
    issue with different programs).

Hardly surprising. We are coming on the 50th anniversary of his death. I remember the announcement on U.S. NBC news. His scowling detached head appearing, probably on a black backdrop as the newsreader intoned the "news." In those days, networks actually
    mentioned things like that.

What a coincidence that you posted this. Last night on KNBC-TV Ch.4 (NBC4LA), at the end of the broadcast, the news reader informed viewers that Gustavo Dudamel had signed a contract to lead the N.Y. Phil, starting in 2025. First time I can recall
classical music news being reported on local television. Granted, it was a 7 second news item, w/ no video or 'production'.
