Not having any interest whatever in music of this old vintage, I find it very hard to work out if Schütz was underrated or what.

How do you tell with such old culture? Sorry for being so lowbrow here.

I don't know how other people rate Heinrich Schuetz, but I rate him very highly indeed. He's bit of a paradox I suppose - solid German Lutheran meets florid Italian Renaissance - he was a student of Gabrieli. Lots of stuff for double choir and soloists
as a result, not to mention sackbuts, cornetts, blockfloete, dolcians &c. His output was enormous. I was first won over by his settings of the Psalms of David, especially 'Ich freue mich dass' (I was glad, c.f. Parry - and the wonderfully named "Herr,
unser Herscher, wie Herrlich ist dein Nam in alle Laender". Then there's the 'Weihnachtshistorie' or Christmas Story, which I play every Christmas, and the deeply moving 'Musikalische Exequien' or Funeral Music, written for an actual funeral of a German
count, and which includes a wonderful setting of the 'Nunc Dimittis' or Song of Simeon if you prefer. Then there's the three (?) books of 'Sinfoniae sacrae' ...

A complete edition has been recorded in Dresden by the Dresdner Kammerchor, under Hans-Christoph Rademann.

"Underrated" is not a correct or useful term here. Schütz was one of
the greatest composers of the early Baroque, but most listeners to
classical music do not listen to music of that period at all. So they
do not "rate" composers of that period. (I personally do not know
his music anywhere close to well enough; I ought to remedy that.)

Yes, indeed, Al, but a word of warning - some of his late works cast off the glories of Venice and revert to a very austere almost plainchant style, which could be disappointing. As a matter of interest, do most listeners to classical music not listen to
the music of Monteverdi or, from a little later, Marc-Antoine Charpentier?

Thanks for that link. Those are two other composers I would rank
similarly; there may be more that I simply don't know enough about,
so a caveat emptor is in order. Perhaps nitpicking, but I would not
call Charpentier "early" baroque. Still, I doubt if he is more
listened to than Schütz. Mointeverdi may be a special case, since
his operas (and Vespers) get performed, and the madrigals are in a
semi-popular style. I could easily be wrong about any of this.
