    Very nice... but this one...

... is on virtually every "greatest" list that is out there. I also have versions with Biggs & Ormandy and Chorzempa-Bern-Maag, and they all have their good points. I have yet to hear "any" version that I do not like... but then, I am pretty easy to
please... which is my own good luck!

You, no doubt, will find fault with all of them... am I right?

No, why should I? Some older recordings have obvious
sonic flaws. And it is difficult to find any recordings
where the oragsn doesn't overpower the orchestra.

My favorites are (not surprisingly) Georges Prêtre,
versions with Maurice Duruflé or Marie-Claire Alain:

and Paul Paray with Marcel Dupré:

I wouldn't object if someone named
Brahms' 3rd as the "best 3rd". Just

All those mentioned are good (don't know the Raff, but I'll take your word for it), but aren't we ignoring the gigantic elephant in the room? I mean the Eroica, of course, Dan's perverse Beethoven-phobic shtick notwithstanding.

Of course, but we were trying to be original. Actually in thinking about it, Prokofiev's 3rd "Fiery Angel" has gradually accumulated more critical plaudits. It can be harsh listening but the orchestration is uniquely Prokofiev.

Fine, but you are still ignoring the gigantic elephant in the room, even if your characterization of that music is accurate--which it isn't.
