I just received and listened to this recording (will listen to symphony 7 later). It is a hell of a performance.
Honeck starts relatively slow, but very forceful (through the whole piece); with many subtleties and details, but never exaggerated, and never at the expense of the drive or flow. Very clear and precise; gripping, compelling. Great notes by the conductor. Great sound. (It's a hybrid SACD - I heard it on a CD player.)

A very strong candidate for a first recommendation of this very often recorded work.
Until now I would have recommended Carlos Kleiber and Szell (with CGO) at first, and maybe Karajan, maybe Chailly.
    (I don't know Reiner's recording.)

    According to this review:

    - Honeck has developed a reputation for drawing new details from works played thousands of times. Here, it was the soft moments in the slow second movement, which the strings in particular, handled with incredible sensitivity. In the middle section of
the third movement, strings were especially rambunctious. Honeck’s Beethoven is always exceptional...

That can be read in more than one way. Can
one hear yaks dancing (or doing whatever
yaks do) in the last movement? Melmoth,
check it out. Does it pass muster with you?
