• Streaming opera from Glyndebourne

From Andrew Clarke@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 3 06:12:14 2023
I subscribed to Glyndebourne Encore this morning, and I'm happy to report that their app works beautifully on the Google Library / Chromecast streaming device, with excellent sound and image. So far I've seen the whole of Sir Peter Hall's production of
La Cenerentola with Ruxandra Donose, and the opening of Handel's "Giulio Cesare". Not cheap - about $US140 per annum - but worth it, if this is any indication.

So I can now stream from the Berlin Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House (opera + the Royal Ballet) and various concerts and operas on Arte, with a little help from a VPN. The ROH app for Google Library/Chromecast continues to be
troublesome - the intrusive Guidance notice has gone, but video quality can be poor, so I use a browser on my phone and cast to Chromecast from that;; there are no problems viewing this service on a laptop of course.

I think this is the way that the big musical institutions are going to have to go. Development costs must be astronomical, but they may have no alternative.
