I like Gould's vol I. of the Beethoven sonatas (Odyssey) but in volume 2 I have mixed feelings. Obviously he relishes the op. 31 sonatas, especially the G-major, but the Appassionata(op. 57) is an anti-performance. Gould dislikes the piece and it sounds like a work of sabotage-though interesting. I have not heard the late sonatas. Supposedly the Hammerklavier is good, but I've heard terrible things about his op. 111. I believe he recorded 3 of the late sonatas in the 50's(?) and never returned to them. What's the verdict.
