• Dorati in Detroit - Complete Decca Recordings

From Jon Bell@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jan 14 08:36:36 2023
I just came across this on Presto Music. Available for pre-order, release on January 20.

    https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/9396296--dorati-in-detroit-complete-decca-recordings

Decca Classics lists the contents of the 18 CDs.

    https://store.deccaclassics.com/*/Box-Sets/Dor-ti-in-Detroit-Complete-Decca-Recordings/7ODF16YX000

Looks like they mirror the original releases, with original artwork, as is the custom nowadays.

I was in nearby Ann Arbor during most of Dorati's time in Detroit, so I bought all these recordings as they came out, mostly on cassettes. Later I replaced them with CDs, except for the "Rhapsody!" album (CD2) which as far as I know was never reissued as-
is on CD. I digitized the cassette 23 years ago. Two of its items (Dvorak and Enescu) are on an Eloquence "Bohemian Rhapsody" set, but I have not seen the Ravel and Liszt on CD anywhere.

I was just discussing this with a friend and we (modern shoppers we be) thought the price a bit steep for 18 CDs. What about the contents? I've found his Decca Detroit recordings not really as interesting as Mercury when I've had a chance to compare. But
I haven't had many chances. What I really want is a chance to grab his Haydn cycle. And a Mercury box would be tempting.

Any other opinions on how attractive this material is?

I have almost all the Dorati recordings (especially Mercury and
    Decca)...
Personally, I have always preferred the Mercury versions...But that's
    just my choice !...

But for Haydn, of course, the complete symphonies and operas can be
found on Decca...Even if I think that his vision of the symphonies has
    aged well...

The Haydn symphonies are out of print and I'm not paying $300 for them. https://www.amazon.com/Haydn-Symphonies-Joseph/dp/B0000042DP/ref=sr_1_3?crid=24JBBD2AHV5Y8&keywords=dorati+haydn&qid=1673727880&sprefix=dorati%2520haydn%2Caps%2C94&sr=8-3

I suppose it hasn't, but I have yet to hear a version of #64 that is as satisfying to me as the Dorati.

Eloquence is releasing his Mono and Stereo Mercury boxes pretty soon.

FWIW, Europa disk has it listed for $79.80 plus about $8 shipping to the U.S. That's $15 less than Presto. I've ordered several times without problem from Europdisc.
