I’m just bowled over by this, to be honest - by the lean sound of the ensemble, the harmonies they create, their living phrasing and rhythms. A real revelation for me, I never knew the music was so satisfying and stimulating.

Interesting, thanks. I have not heard this.

Glass may at times have been formulaic and tiresome, yet, when he is good he can be very good indeed, and there are many such instances, no mere few.

Finally had some spare time today, and listened to this whole program
in one sitting... maybe not the greatest idea... but generally
pleasant music. I didn't find it grabbing my attention, though.
More like a background conversation or something.... Classic sense
    of balance etc., though, yeah.

I need all the help I can get in following the threads carried on by
you, Todd and Cheregi. So: in this case, what is "Bent"?

And how can one be "slightly addicted"? :)

Ah, thanks. I am highly unlikely to click on any link to Glass unless

Well, as noted, it's generally pleasant music... lots of "balance"
& unlikely to really grab you... so stakes seem pretty low. Kinda
the opposite of what you just said, I guess. :-)

But then, why not? Think of Haydn. (Seriously.)

Seriously? I find Haydn to be a composer of considerable substance,
and one I greatly enjoy. Whereas the Glass I've heard tends to bore
me - there seems to be little of significance to warrant exploring,
i.e., no feeling that I am missing something.

If I am going to expand my horizns there are many other directions
which are likely to be more productive

Okay, okay! I listened to the Suite from "Bent". Some of it (most
notably the 6th movement) was more interesting than I had expected.
But for most movements the best I can say is that they were mostly
under three minutes. Much of it reminded me of Pachelbel's Canon.

Not really to my taste, and I sensed little I would appreciate any
more from further listening. As for interesting harmonies or some
analogy with Haydn, well, I'll say no more. :)

Ha, OK. I listened again, and that's who comes to mind for me.
Neither are favorite composers. I appreciated hearing the Glass

Yes you’re right about Pachelbel’s canon. The thing to try is the first quartet - in that early piece he was doing slightly different stuff I think. Glass seems to me to be someone who has found a winning formula which he has milked for a long time.
