• Brahms piano concerto #1 (S. piano, K. conducting)

From Roland van Gaalen@21:1/5 to All on Sun Dec 25 02:21:46 2022
Used to like this very much, but haven't listened to the cd for at least ten years.
    More later.

I don't care! I wouldn't mind if it went on
    for several hours.

A few pianists manage to make it interesting:

To me it seems to have the same coherence, and warmth, as a typical Bruckner symphony.
[I'm asking for trouble now and inviting sarcastic dismissals of Bruckner or Brahms or both, I understand.]
This concerto almost sounds like variations on a theme, this time by Brahms himself (I guess), variations that are beautifully melodic and flow naturally. I still like it very much, and this performance in particular.
I bought the CD in 1996, and my opinion of it hasn't changed at all.

    Some other good performances
    I mentioned sometimes include
    Rubinstein, Malcuzynski, Freire,
    Kehrer and Katchen. These days
    even La Wang plays it!

She sounds like she is practicing
itin front of an audience. Nice job
if one can get it, and a recipe for
    marketing success -- practice in
a good looking dress and call it
    art!

I do not like the oft recommended
    versions by Backhaus, Zimermann,
    Fleisher, Gilels or Grimaud.

I have a soft spot in my heart for
    Kempff/Konwitschny/Dresden.
My dad like it very much. I used
to play it at 45 rpm instead of 33,
which made it sound just right!
