In the U.S., nobody talks about 'dumbing down' anymore because it's become only too obvious.

Concerning literature study guides, there is a series called NO FEAR LITERATURE which includes "Beowulf" where the Old English text is on the left-hand page and facing it on the right-hand page is the text in modern English

If you can believe it, that series includes "Heart of Darkness" probably because young readers nowadays find the 1899 text just too difficult to fathom:

    https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/#jumpTo-no-fear

But then again, after "Love Story" came out, it was abridged(?!) and included in the Readers Digest Condensed Book series.

By the way, that series also included Lampedusa's "The Leopard" which is not a very long novel to begin with.

But unfortunately what we have been affected by is the increasingly omnipresent phenomenon of lying, lying, lying and lying again and again. The truth matters - it matters a lot. As an ex-journalist I was brought up with a profound respect for truth. You
may laugh, considering the state of media trash these days, but journalists are still dying, being shot and imprisoned, and hiding away from revenge killings because they dare to tell the truth. Systematic and state sponsored lies are everywhere - in
Russia, China, Burma, and of course within the Republican Party who are still supporting the King of Lies, Donald Trump. The fact that half of the USA could actually consider voting with their eyes wide open for such a consistent and unrepentant liar
shows to what extent the whole world is disintegrating before our eyes. Europe may end up as the only place on earth that is run in a moral way, where values actually matter.

You are too optimistic about Europe, Andy. It's not that values actually matter over here but that no one in his/her right mind would deny that they should matter. Somehow that makes in itself already quite a difference.

I doubt whether our Western values should matter outside Western states. I'm a cultural relativist - although I am aware of the serious shortcomings of that position.

You may laugh, considering the state of media trash these days, but journalists are still dying, being shot and imprisoned, and hiding away from revenge killings because they dare to tell the truth.

But unfortunately what we have been affected by is the increasingly omnipresent phenomenon of lying, lying, lying and lying again and again. The truth matters - it matters a lot. As an ex-journalist I was brought up with a profound respect for truth.

Biden and the dems never lied, eh? You are an idiot driven by your hatred; not by understanding politics.

It's funny that the republican party is grouped with Russia, China and Burma by Andy - just too funny. Goes to show how far Andy has his head up his ass.

Similar to how Dan linked Netanyahu to Putin; KGB-agent Netanyahu, eh?

    According to this:

    - ...There are still many smart, dedicated journalists doing first-class work, sometimes at genuine risk to their health, careers and even lives. But in many ways, Russia is one of the luckier places — try doing the same reportage in Iran, Egypt,
Uzbekistan, Somalia or Vietnam. Generally speaking, media freedom is in retreat, at a time when arguably we need it all the more, not least as regimes get more used to limiting debate and transparency.

One part of dumbing down is prolixity, to take
5 pages or 50 pages to state a very simple
concept, such as "that candidate is not part of
    our network".

Or making a video as an excuse not to write out
    a statement.

Or making a 30 minute video and not making a
description of it, burying 5 seconds worth of
thought somewhere in the video as a "gotcha".

I see this dumbing down everywhere, including
    universities, usenet and news articles.

We do owe a great debt to men like Alfred Deller, James Bowman and Russel Oberlin who recreated this voice, lost outside the hooty enclaves of Anglican / Epicopalian cathedral choirs. They had to field all the wink-wink nudge-nudge innuendos from people
who knew no better. Now counter-tenors are everywhere, led by virtuosi like Philippe Jaroussky and Max-Emmanuel Cencic.
