I have a quirky fondness for ancient tenors in "L'invitation au voyage":
    Hugues Cuénod, Charles Holland.

Well the Holland is going to be difficult to hear. Cuénod, like Pears and Erb, is a acquired taste!

If you like this sort of voice, it may be worth listening to Karl Erb and Peter Pears. Not that they resemble each other, but they are all three . . . how shall I put it . . . unique in their own way.

( I am a great fan of Erb and of the young Pears; I find Cuenod more challenging, but I agree that the Duparc is good.)

If you like this sort of voice, it may be worth listening to Karl Erb and Peter Pears. Not that they resemble each other, but they are all three . . . how shall I put it . . . unique in their own way.

( I am a great fan of Erb and of the young Pears; I find Cuenod more challenging, but I agree that the Duparc is good.)

i agree there's a connection between cuenod, erb, and pears, and i like the latter two more now than when we last talked about them. i am guessing i find cuenod easier than the other two for the exact reasons you find him more difficult...

Considering that she was Debussy's 2nd Melisande, could the following give an idea of how she sounded?

A voice which seems to me to have the good features of “trained” and “natural” is Peter Schreier’s. This week I was listening to his Schumann op 90.

I'm no expert in song (or in anything really) but I have two CDs of
    Duparc songs I can recommend.

Here's an album of the complete songs with Thomas Allen and Sarah
Walker. Both are in good voice and make some effort at interpretation:

    https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/7944812--henri-duparc-the-complete-songs

I also have Janet Baker performing a few songs in the orchestral
versions. I've never appreciated her "hooty" voice: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8112808--dame-janet-baker-song-recital

But out of a nagging desire to be gobsmacked, I sought out the Maggie
Teyte version - and my gob was enormously smacked! The song had an
tremendous effect - it was almost like an Edith Piaf rendition!

I enjoy Lieder and Melodies particularly due to the tight integration
between the words and the music, but unfortunately all too often the
words have no inflection or emphasis in many performances.

I'm not asking for overemphasis like Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau,
but the song should mean something - and Teyte makes sure it does.

I found the Teyte version at Internet Archive, and the only commercial
release was at Apple - a needle drop called "French Art Songs".

I have the Hyperion with Walker and Allen, but I'm not crazy about the singing, especially Walker. Earlier this year Signum released a complete Duparc but I haven't heard it.

Thanks for mentioning the Signum release. I’m finding myself really intrigued by Huw Montague Rendall’s voice - really characterful!

Enjoying Kruysen/Lee this evening, Kruysen has an attractive voice of charcoal coloured velvet which I don’t get tired of. I remember a really special Four Serious Songs from him, I’ll try to find it tomorrow.
