• Ravel's L'Enfant

From Herman@21:1/5 to All on Wed Nov 23 00:08:11 2022
A clip of the much-lauded Sabine Delvieilhe brought me to a complete concertante performance of Ravel's delightful L'Enfant et les Sortileges, with the Radio France Orchestra, conducted by Mikko Franck.
In general the cast is pretty good. Sabine Delvieilhe is replaced by the young Belgian coloratura Jodie Devos and the Boy is sung by Chloe Briot.
L'Enfant could be described as a oboe concerto, the Pastourelle section is one of Ravel's best inspirations, great for the jolly Eflat clarinet, too.
The concert is from 2021, and the choir is spaced apart due to covid restrictions.

No, this won't do. The child is sung by a mature soprano voice with full vibrato. That's not a child, so the whole piece loses its meaning.

Maazel has a good child with a fresh, bell-like tone and more than a hint of naughtiness

Ravel wrote the Enfant role for a mezzo. Françoise Ogéas,
in Maazel's 1961 recording, vibrates every bit as much as
Briot in the performance above. The difference is Ogéas
sings the opening lines as if they are staccato dotted
(which they are not), as an expression of her stubbornness.

The Maazel recording is a wonderful document. Just
listen to the vibrato in the horns.

I would prefer a less horny version. Maybe even horn-less.
