    This is on youtube.
I stumbled across this thread while looking for information on the Altus version. I was familiar with the Testament and BBC versions from 1957 and the EMI version from 1975 and always liked the BBC best of the three, but the EMI, though it had the
cleanest recorded sound, was so mannered that, with the opening and closing being framed by pieces from Album fur die Jugend, it almost felt like someone looking back over a work of youthful emotionality, that now only evokes regret, or perhaps more
aptly, bitterness. To my great surprise and delight, the Tokyo version on Altus is, to my ears, wonderful! And the sound is clean without any obtrusive audience noise!

I just listened to the 1973 Lugano performance on YT and enjoyed it. The sound was fine on my system, though there were some odd splice noises in it between numbers. I imprinted on Rachmaninov, but also enjoy Myra Hess, De Larrocha, Davidovich, Cortot
    etc.

ABM fans generally agree his 1957 London Carnaval

Listening to it now - it's nice, thanks. Female pianists do well here - De Larrocha, Hess, Davidovich, Virsaladze, Novaes, Leonskaja..... probably more though I'm not keen on A.Fischer. I assume Clara played this piece in concerts?

The 3 pianists at the top of my favorites list - Rachmaninov, Michelangeli and De Larrocha have all recorded Carnaval. For Michelangeli, I’d go with the 1957 Live recording on Testament or the Warner box, for DeLarrocha the earlier analog recording on
    Decca.

I’m also curious to check out Cortot’s recording which was the first I’d ever heard in my early teen years.

heard him do it live in 1956 in CH, seemed a bit under powered but I know a lot more now (I hope) now:-))

Agree. In my top 3 Carnavals with ABM 1957 and - of course - Rach 1929.
