very glad to see this thread taken up by others, and i had no idea m. r. lotfi played kamancheh in addition to tar and setar!

i thought this comment on the kiya tabassian video was interesting or 'funny': "Ofcourse this is not pure persian traditional but an interpretation for western listeners. Great job . Thank you"

Thanks for drawing this group's attention to Persian
music. I find it very inspiring and refreshing. Some
of the works even remind me of Spanish music in
    some ways. Beats Bruckner! ;-)

No. More like non-general Western European, French, British, German, Scandinavian, which to me mean flavours I wouldn't necessarily call exotic. Greek is exotic, whereas perhaps Czech is not. Exotic to some ears might mean flavoured by middle eastern
influences, or African. Much depends upon where you were born and the sounds you got acquainted with.

Not in sense that middle eastern music is, to my ears. I like his symphonies very much, a bit like R Strauss on steroids !!
His string quartets are nice too, but a bit academically inclined. Sonia Rubinsky for his piano music. A clip below of a Choros piece played by Rubinsky.

I read an essay a while ago that I can't find now about the 'borderlands of tonality and modality', places where western chordal music meets middle eastern modal music like in flamenco, certain types of greek/balkan traditional music, and many more
modern types of middle eastern song, arguing that there's a broadly predictable way that concessions and compromises have been made throughout history to overlay those two ways of listening onto each other, from which can be generalized possibly a kind
of 'music theory' not reducible to either. It was a fun read.
