    SPONTANEOUS LUNACY VERDICT - 4/10

It's not the greatest thing Wynonie ever did....but a 4??

I have it as lowish 7

Never in any of the old Battles it did appear in the March 2022 edition of Bruce's Obscure tournaments
(nominated by Steve). It lost out in Round 1 in a group won by Ray Price's "Crazy Arms"

Here's that "Pot Likker" number by Todd Thodes that Samp aludes to as primary inspiration for this one. Originally from 1949 it appeared first on Sensation label then reissued later that year on King

    I've got a low 8.

Samp's problem is that he doesn't like 50s music any more or less than he likes every subsequent era. So any time a record sounds even a slight bit dated he lowers the rating.

He gave "Pot Liker" a 7. If "rot Gut" was from 1949 instead of late 1952 he would have given it a 7 or an 8.

Wynonie's very next single - "Bad News Baby (There'll Be No Rockin' Tonight" has a January 1953 release date according to what I have,

Making the two releases TWO months apart.....

Yet it has the very NEXT King catalog number---only ONE number after the above record--that is King 4593

What's the story there I wonder?

I have "Bad News Baby" as 1952. No review in Galen Gart's 1952 or 1953 book.

It's reviewed in the January 10 1953 editions of both BB and CBD

As is Lloyd Price's "Ain't It A Shame" which IIRC we both have in our 1953 lists

I say anything reviewed as early as January 10th had to have been out already in the prior year IMO. So I'll be moving "Ain't It A Shame" and the flip "Tell Me Pretty Baby" to 1952 tomorrow.

I'm not sure its that cut and dried. What about Elvis' "Too Much" reviewed in BB Jan 12 1957. Does that automatically now belong in 1956?

Does Chuck's "Let It Rock" reviewed BB Jan 11 1960 belong in 1959?

And closer to home what about Nappy Brown and "Coal Miner". I have this as 1961 as (I think) do you. Yet it was reviewed by BB Jan 9 that year. So by your reckoning above it has to be out already in late 1960 yes?

But according to the Savoy sessionography files it wasn't recorded until December 22 1960 so ole Granpappy Herman must have had some kind of rocket up his ass in releasing it eh? :)
