Here's how this Orioles version fared in the 1952 Singles Battle

    PRELIM
10 The Orioles - You Belong To Me - Jubilee 5102
    8 The Four Buddies - You're Part Of Me - Savoy 845

    R1
7 The Orioles - You Belong To Me - Jubilee 5102
14 Little Esther - Aged And Mellow - Federal 12078

And in the later Vocal Groups Battle

    PRELIM
    6 The Orioles -- You Belong To Me -- Jubilee 5102 -- 1952
    12 The Drifters -- I'll Take You Home -- Atlantic 2201 -- 1963

    SPONTANEOUS LUNACY VERDICT - 3/10

I always liked the song a lot so it gets a 7 from me (but both Dean Martin and Jo Stafford get higher 7's still with their versions)

Jo Stafford's version is better than this?

Gotta be your whiteness coming out.

What about the original version by Joni James and the Sue Thompson reading?

Sorry but I simply refuse to be hustled into this peculiar "You have to have an aversion to violins" thing preached by too many fans over there in the US.

I prefer to think for myself and I simply WILL NOI take part in the resulting silliness of shutting myself off from some good records including several absolute classics of r&b (headed by "There Goes My Baby") that are enhanced by the addition of violins

Jo Stafford was one of the better white song thrushes of the era and had several records I like.Joni is not in the same class.

Sue Thompson's vocal is too twee for me (as on her later stuff)

I can't think of any pre-soul R&B record that's "enhanced" by Violins. Sometimes they are more tolerable than other times based on hos they're being used, like as the lead instrument at the start of "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" or "Kiddio." They are
especially bad when used in an arpeggio like at the start of "There Goes My Baby" or just as the background behind a singer IMO.

There plenty of country that is enhanced by violins, but those are "fiddles," not violins.

I never shut myself off from "There Goes My Baby." It's on my 1959 list, just nowhere near where it appears on your 1959 list. It's #178 for me. Despite the putrid violins it still gets a 7, although a lower 7 than the better flip side, "Oh My Love."

    ---------------
I never met anyone other than Bruce who was averse to violins. They
don't bother me in the least.
It's blaring horns that hurt my ears, but I recognize this as a personal
    quirk, not a universal rule.

I always liked the song a lot so it gets a 7 from me (but both Dean
Martin and Jo Stafford get higher 7's still with their versions)
    ----------
I grew up with the Duprees version, and dimly remembered Jo Stafford.
When I first heard the Orioles version it hit me like a thunderbolt.
It's an 8 for me. More recently I heard Joni James's original, which I
would describe as "decent" or "listenable" --a 6.

I think you're onto something: Samp hates Jubilee records.
