    HELP!!!!

I notice that Nova sometimes shortens the title line on some of my posts (as in the Dave Bartholomew review I just posted)

This is most annoying but I fully expect to hear that its something that I'm doing wrong

Can someone please tell me how to correct this?

    Thanks in advance!!

Roger, outside of Nova I'm seeing your title in full:

    REVIEW-Dave Bartholomew-Little Girl Sing Ding-A-Ling:IMPERIAL
    5210;NOVEMBER 52

    so it might only be a problem on Nova's web page;
this might not mean anything but the first character missing for you
is a "-" (even though the preceding "REVIEW-Dave" got through)

if nobody here can resolve this issue you could email
    retroguy@novabbs.org

The subject line is only truncated in the list of subjects view. The
subject line itself remains intact, and goes with the article when it
peers, or is read in the thread view.

Your subject truncated where it did because it tries to truncate at the end
of a word, and the next part is '-A-Ling:IMPERIAL' which looks like a word because there are no spaces.

The purpose of truncating in the list of subjects view, is so that the site works ok on smaller devices, not only desktop/laptop view.

If you read the article you posted (click on it, or read it with a
newsreader), you will see the subject line remains intact.

At some point, I may work on getting it to display a different length for different devices, but not anytime soon.

You are not giving enough detailed logic here, Retro Guy,
enough to be of practical help in constructing subjects/titles.

bemused Roger, and others, might be asking, in detail what is the
difference between these two subjects/titles that caused the second
one to be truncated after Ding

    I see a bug!

I'll work on this today and reply back when I get somewhere.

I do have a doctor appt in a couple of hours, so there will be a bit of a delay.

I do have a doctor appt in a couple of hours, so there will be a bit of a delay.

I found the problem. It's due to the subject being encoded on posting, and being multi-line. The second line was being discarded. It now displays (on a test site) as:
    REVIEW-Dave Bartholomew-“Little Girl Sing Ding-A-Ling”:IMPERIAL 5210;N
so it is being truncated at the pre-defined 69 characters.

I have it working properly now on a test site, but need to do some testing to make sure it doesn't break anything else. I'll keep at it for a bit.

This is just a test in response to discussion in another thread.

Let's see if the subject line displays properly.

It should still truncate at 69 characters, but hopefully not before that.

One more time with the entire subject line pasted properly.

Probably a simple db field limit where
they inject the post into their database.

If they increase that limit, it should fix the problem.

I've noticed that on some longer titles but usually not.
