If I'm misrepresenting Thunderbird with its comparatively shockingly
horrible layout, please (Diane, Steve, ...) let me know - perhaps
different layouts can be specified which I honestly don't know about?

This is pretty much my layout, though I have the upper right section
filling most of right side of my screen.

Why is that shockingly horrible ?

Many reasons when compared to Agent's layout.

For a start, you might only see, *in the first instance*, a small
fraction of a message that you highlight - you have to scroll down
to see the rest of the message.

Agent - *please click on blue Full Screen* and scroll down slightly to
see topics in red at bottom which means they have not yet been viewed https://RWC-0.tinytake.com/msc/OTA1OTMzNF8yMjU1Mzg1Mg

For a start, you will usually only see, in the first instance, a small
part of a message that you select - you then have to scroll down to
see the rest of the message and you are still only seeing a small part
of the message at any one time because of the limited space allocated
at the bottom of the screen by Thunderbird.

Agent, on the other hand, can reserve the entire right-hand
side of the screen for any message selected.

You have a choice on you windows layouts in Agent. At least in the
    paid version.
