This is a *derivative* side - a slightly fancy but precise word
that could have been used by Bill and everyone else here over the
years.
"Single Life" sounds like it was influenced by "The Fat Man" by
Fats Domino, which charted in 1950.
It would depend on how Bill was "feeling" today as to whether he would deduct "points" from it or not.

A high percentage of all 195o's (and later) records are "derivative" in one way or another. If they're good who cares?

As "The Fat Man" is even more influenced by the earlier "Junker Blues"

Sometimes Bill does. Depends how he is "feeling" that day. If the lumbago acts up, forget it!

Not so sure about that. You can make a case that "Single Life" was more influenced by "The Fat Man" since they were both largely written by the same person, and it is clearly just a rewrite of "The Fat Man."

Thanks, Roger, I meant and should have said *perceptibly* derivative.
Leaving aside covers/remakes, only a very small percentage of 1950's
(and later) records are "perceptibly derivative" in the minds of the
majority of period music fans.
For instance, how many Everly Brothers hits immediately bring to mind
an earlier similar record by another artist - perhaps none?

Roger's Crayton wins the group by a point with what I think is the best record in the contest this month. It's a long time favorite of mine. Carl's Parker takes second. Diane's Crickets is solidly in third place. Mark's Mardi Gras takes 4th place to stay
alive, while Rick's Rays bit the dust. Other than "Daddy Cool" I really dislike all the Rays records other than "Tippety Top" which is pretty good.

It 'might' have come last anyway, but it wasn't helped by
the supplied link having a lead vocal with poor fidelity; this YT

It's not great but I do like "Silhouettes" and I have a soft spot for their "Magic Moon" (I always liked the "Clair De Lune" tune). Otherwise I tend to agree

Looks like nobody else was bothered by the Meadowlarks thievery as it was only 6 points away from a perfect score. Carl has a huge contender there. Jim' Spoon takes second and Mark's last minute replacement nomination does well, taking third place. My
Don Woody got through in 4th place thanks to Steve's ill advised Bowman/McShann dud being in the group.

There is also a big lack of nominations of female records, so before you can conclude that female records don't do well you'd have to determine how many female items have been nominated. and how they have done. I just checked back and no female record
has ever won a tournament. But there have not been many female records even nominated. That live Billie Holiday thing I nominated in the first ever tournament made the FINAL FOUR.

I nominated all 5 female leads in the last pre-1947 contest (on purpose). I thought they were all excellent entries, Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, Una Mae Carlisle, Della Reese and Mildred Bailey. One of them may have made the top 16, can't remember, a bit
disappointing, but then every one else had pretty outstanding entries in that contest.

Roger's Boo wins the group. My Links were second with what I think is the only doo wop record with 2 separate sax solos. Carl's Four Jacks took third and Rock's D & B grabbed 4th place to stay alive. Unfortunately for Jim and his Masters, they are going
home because of certain people's misplaced nostalgia for 4 Dion and 3 corny white guys trying to sing.

Just got this email from Carl.
Bruce both my laptop and iPhone are hanging up on icaptcha now. It shows up on a separate page in the upper left corner and hangs up until it times out and says I didn’t respond. I have no way to respond in google groups anymore until Google fixes
this. Don’t have an extra laptop with XP

I am sad to see the demise here of one of my favorite records in the contest and certainly the best record of the 8 IMO that have so far been eliminated.
I fondly remember buying the single---on import---it wasn't released here in 1962---after hearing it played several times on one of the AFN r&b shows
It was 1967 before it finally showed up here via the UK President label. Very nice record!
P.S What's the deal on the Midas label release on this? Is that the original? Or some later US reissue?

I would think it's the original but I don't know. It's going for more money than the One-derful pressing.
