Live on the BBC, January 1964. John on the vocals of course.

Other than Chuck himself, I don't know of another version that I like as much as this one. Anybody?

Chuck is of course untouchable on this one and most other versions are nowhere in comparison.

I'd go with Jerry Lee in #2 place on this one with several recordings of it but none better than the version I saw him do at one of his London shows back when

I just listened to all of JLL's versions on Youtube. I don't think the conversion to piano as the lead instrument works. So far I'm still saying the Beatles one is the second best version.

    I don't like it. It's sloppy-sounding.
Why do you say John "of course?" George sang their version of "Roll
Over Beethoven," which is just about flawless.

I remember liking "Johnny B. Goode" by Johnny Winter, but I haven't
heard it in a long long time.

    Because of the song title.

George sang their version of "Roll > Over Beethoven," which is just about flawless.

But that was a studio recording where they could practice it and do a bunch of takes until they got it right. "JBG" was done live on the radio. Yes, it's a little sloppy, but that not always a bad thing with rock and roll.

    It's a 5 for me, the Beatles is a 6.

Good promo, but I doubt it's the Newsgroup's favorite song! :-)

    Many might think it's not even Chuck Berry's best recording;
folk will compare JBG with earlier:

Rock And Roll Music - Oct 1957
Roll Over Beethoven - May 1956
    Maybellene - Jul 1955
Sweet Little Sixteen - Jan 1958

The Beatles' BBC performances were recorded live in the studio, but they were not performed live during broadcast. They were pre-recorded. They did do retakes to get it right.

Never heard it before, but no, this is the later version of the group when he added the sax player. I mainly like the first 2 albums on Rounder. The thing that makes the Beatles version good for me is that it sticks very closely to what Chuck's version
    sounds like.

Okay, did not know that. But I doubt they were interested in taking as much time to get a perfect tale like they would for something that was gonna be a record.

Unlike what the critics will say, I usually prefer when an act tries to remake a song and sound as close to the earlier version as they can, rather than changing it into their own style.

BTW, The Stones did "JBG" in a practice session in 1962, before the band was very good yet. If Diane thinks the Beatles version is sloppy, she'll REALLY think this version is ultra raggedy.
