Never paid attention to this track. It's okay. Have you heard the latest from our wonderful conservatives. They now say that slavery had some good points, that many slaves learned a trade from it, like being a blacksmith.

    21. Crystal Blue Persuasion - Kelly Brothers

I have this in 1970. Looks like you're correct, I'm moving it.

    30. Someone To Watch Over Me - Ray Charles

Did not know it. Violin laden slosh. Never heard him sing in such a high key before.

    34. Across The Universe - Beatles

Shocker, although the version from 1969 is different than the version on the "Let It Be" album in 1970. Do you have the right one?

    1969 release:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44OvMY-OPFk

Here's the version from "Let It Be."

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90M60PzmxEE

    36. Evil - Howlin’ Wolf

I don't even file this. Fake psychedelic crap IMO.

    37. To Love Somebody - James Carr

Did not know it, worth having, but the Bee Gees were not worried. I like the Sweet Inspirations version better than this.

    39. He Made A Woman Out Of Me - Betty La Vette

Did not know it, worth having. Sounds like a country song, did some country girl do it, I don't see it listed as a country hit.

    40. Walk Away - Ann Peebles

Did not know it. Worth having although the organ does not help.

    46. Louisiana Man - Jerry Lee Lewis

Did not know it. Pretty good version worth having, but Rusty & Doug is a tad better.

    49. Happy - William Bell

Did not know it. Too much production, don't like it much.

    56. Tail Dragger - Howlin’ Wolf

I have this version from Chess 1890 in 1964.

    Here's the shitty 1969 version.

    64. Jackson - Jerry Lee Lewis & Linda Gail Lewis

Never heard it before, decent version, but definitely third after the two famous ones. I don't think the pumping piano works, it sounds like they are forcing the tempo faster than it should be.

    67. Oo Wee Baby I Love You - Roscoe Robinson

I can do without this one.

    75. Everybody Needs Somebody - James Carr

Did not know it, worth having. Don't like the Stevie Wonder like synthesiser on a Southern Soul record like this.

    78. Down Home - Hound Dog Taylor

Don't see any YT videos with "Down Home." There's a few videos of "Down Home Special." Is that it?

Well, I like the Preston a lot. Cool chord changes in the verses, and and very good counter melody in the chorus with the sax.

It's not the least bit funny if he is. It's not the least bit accurate if he isn't. There's no comparison. Lee Hazelwood is no Johnny Cash.

Well, Lee actually wrote songs instead of stealing them as Cash did with "Folsom Prison Blues" and others. Lee was also a real good producer, and that's what makes the difference with "Jackson." The vocals are not that important in what is half a novelty
song. It's the better arrangement and production on what was BY FAR the biggest hit version by Nancy and Lee.

Rolling Stone ranked Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra No. 9 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time. Johnny and June did not make the list.

Lee wrote "The Fool" for Sanford Clark, produced and co-wrote most of Duane Eddy's hits, including "Rebel Rouser" and "Forty Miles Of Bad Road." He also wrote and produced "These Boots Are Made For Walking," which was a bigger record than ANY Johnny Cash
hit. He produced "Something Stupid," which was also a bigger hit than any Johnny Cash record. He wrote most of Nancy's other hits, and also wrote several songs for Nancy's daddy, such as "This Town," which became the theme of a popular segment on the
Letterman show. He also produced things for the Byrds and others. He wrote songs for many artists in later years, like Nick Cave, The Jesus and Mary Jane, the Tubes and Megadeth, all while Cash was on and off the wagon many times.

Never heard it before, decent version, but definitely third after the two famous ones. I don't think the pumping piano works, it sounds like they are forcing the tempo faster than it should be.
I agree the Cash/Carter version is best but I think Jerry & Linda Gail come in a good second
Whoa, I didn't say the Cash Carter was first. The Sinatra/Hazelwood is first, THEN the Cash/Carter, and then this.
The S/H better than Cash/Carter? You jest of course

It's not the least bit funny if he is. It's not the least bit accurate if he isn't. There's no comparison. Lee Hazelwood is no Johnny Cash.
Well, Lee actually wrote songs instead of stealing them as Cash did with "Folsom Prison Blues" and others. Lee was also a real good producer, and that's what makes the difference with "Jackson." The vocals are not that important in what is half a
novelty song. It's the better arrangement and production on what was BY FAR the biggest hit version by Nancy and Lee.

Yes, I'm saying that Lee had much more talent as a songwriter and producer than Johnny had. And I'm saying that when we evaluate versions of a particular song the fact that one artist had a much more significant career than the other is not relevant.
Cash recorded many songs where his version is not the best version.

His version of "Amen" is not a pimple on the ass of the Impressions version. His version of "Battle Of New Orleans" can't touch the Johnny Horton version. His version of "Busted" is not near as good as Ray Charles version. None of the Hank Williams songs
he did are even close to Hank's versions, or several other versions.

    How about this?

Nowhere near the Ray Charles or the Presley version.

There's a reason why the Nancy & Lee "Jackson" was the huge national hit and the Cash/Carter version only made the country charts. Also, the Nancy & Lee album with "Jackson" went Gold and reached #13 on the Billboard LP charts in a 44 week run. It was
bigger than all but 3 of Cash's album, which includes the 2 famous live ones. The Cash/Carter album with "Jackson" barely cracked the top 200 on the same Billboard chart, peaking at #194 in a whopping 3 week run.

You probably like Sci-Fi better than anyone here. Most of those lyrics are not so idiotic. I think there's a decent chance that man won't be alive anymore in 2525 the way things are going with climate change and other things. It's not that far fetched

    MY 1969 list:

    1 ¦ I Can Hear Music ¦ Beach Boys

Very good but for me The Ronettes just edge it on this one

    11 ¦ Venus ¦ Shocking Blue

Always found this one very irritating

17 ¦ Mean Woman Blues ¦ Warren Phillips & Rockets

Actually members of the Savoy Brown group. Not bad but can't compete with the champion Jerry Lee version

30 ¦ Spirit In The Sky ¦ Norman Greenbaum

This sold well again a second time over here when it featured in the movie "Contact"

    57 ¦ Sugar Sugar ¦ Archies
59 ¦ Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye ¦ Steam

    Could'nt stand either of these
