What the fuck? You already had this as #23 in 1960, and that's where it belongs. Came out on an album that year.

By the way, why only 50 + 10. I'd like to see the entire list.

    WORST HOT 100 No.1 SINGLE FROM 1961

    Wooden Heart - Joe Dowell

    Easy.

    WORST R&B No.1 SINGLE FROM 1961

One Mint Julep - Ray Charles

Let me see, there's gotta be something worse than this.

For me, your favorite record of the year is my worst #1 R&B song of the year, "Stand By Me." It's boring as hell IMO.

BEST UK ARTST SINGLE FROM 1961

    The Frightened City - Shadows

Just listened to it, not much there for me. "Warpaint" by the Brooks Brothers is better, but not really all that good. Doesn't look like there were really any good record by UK artists in 1961. Of course things pick up a lot on 1962 with "Love Me Do" and
then with lots of stuff in 1963 and beyond.

Vocally I'd probably go with Helen Shapiro and "You Don't Know" a song

BTW talking of Helen and your mention of the Liverpool layabouts
reminds me of this one from 1963 --you guys over there know it?

It's bad enough that these are only bubbling under, but it's criminal that these are not anywhere to be found:
    Heart And Soul- Cleftones
    For Sentimental Reasons- Cleftones

When I graduated from junior high school in 1961 I had one of those
autograph albums that were popular at the time. It had a few pages
where you would fill in your favorite actor, your favorite book, etc.,
and my favorite record "of all time" was "Heart And Soul" by the
Cleftones. Oddly, I never bought that record, but I did have "For
    Sentimental Reasons."

I remember at the time loving "Heart And Soul" in the Jan & Dean
version. It got a lot of airplay here but without charting.

Although it was released here I never heard The Cleftones version
    until much later

    83. Steal Your Heart Away - Bobby Parke

His last name is missing the r at the end.

Nice Ray Charles copy, specifically sounds like "I Believe To My Soul." Ray should have sued.

    88. Here Comes The Night - Ben E. King

Did not have it, grabbed it now, but it's just a 5 at best. You older folks who heard this kind of stuff in the early 60s like it much more than I do. For me, the early 60s were a big lull between the much better R&B of the 50s and the much better REAL
soul of the like 1964-1967 time frame. IMO these early 60s things suffer from what the producers wanted to add to make the records more pop radio friendly. In other words they were whitened up too much for me to love them like you guys do. I think that
maybe the worst thing that ever happened to R&B was when "There Goes My Baby" was such a huge hit. It got all these producers going on giving more pop elements to black records.

I've always heard a connection between this record and the Dave Clark
5's best record (IMO) "Bits And Pieces." They sound very similar to me,
with that bang bang bang beat.

    10 ¦ Smoky Places ¦ Corsairs

Criminally never released as a single here (tho we did get the "I'll Take You Home" followup). Maybe Chess wanted too much money for it?

39 ¦ Walk Right Back ¦ Everly Brothers

Really good Everlys side (even tho Sonny Curtis never finished writing the song :) but I have to put in a word for the "Ebony Eyes" flip that I know most folk here dislike but which I've always liked and which has some of their best harmonies on it. > 40
    ¦ Ya-Ya ¦ Lee Dorsey

43 ¦ Just Got To Know ¦ Jimmy McCracklin

Highspot of the last contest and congrats to Diane for getting so far with it

    45 ¦ Blue Moon ¦ Marcels

Together with "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" (The Teenagers) and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (The Platters) one of only THREE singles by US R&B vocal groups to top the UK chart during our era

    101 ¦ Coal Miner ¦ Nappy Brown

Big record on the Northern Soul scene over here

105 ¦ Hello Mary Lou ¦ Ricky Nelson

Much the better side of the single. Never understood America instead taking the mushy "Travelin' Man" side to the top of the charts

108 ¦ Mean Little Mama ¦ Roy Orbison

One of the standout tracks on the "Roy Orbison At The Rockhouse" LP on Sun that we found still in bulk stock at Select-O-Hits in Memphis on our first US visit

124 ¦ Where Have All The Flowers Gone ¦ Kingston Trio

I generally have absolutely no use at all for the Kingston Trio---but I make an exception for this one that I stil like quite a bit
