Tina Turner's first recording{, as Little Anna Mae Bullock, b. Nov
1939,} was a song called "Boxtop" in 1958. She was 16{?} years old at
the time and was singing {in the background} with Ike Turner's Kings
of Rhythm. The song was not a commercial success, but it did help to
    launch Turner's career.

Tina's vocal contribution can certainly be heard

Someone on the news was telling a story about an interview Ike gave
later in his life. Ike said that in the 1950s he was writing songs he
needed someone like Little Richard to sing. When he met Tina, he said,
    "Tina was my Little Richard."

This struck me as an extremely odd thing to say, but I guess it makes
sense from a business point of view. Maybe. I don't know.

I can see a comparison between Tina and Little Richard as performers. Rough voices, turning the volume up, shouting as a form of singing, lots of body movement, a grounding in the rough edges and near-hysteria of a lot of the emotional highs gospel often reaches for, etc. I'm sure Ike telling Tina to imitate Little Richard (plus the live gospel she would have heard in church) had a lot to do with Tina's singular "frenetic" early style. As a CCR fan, I think her verson of "Rollin' On The River" is a very distant second to the original. And I also think "Mountain High, River Low" is a work of genius--Spector's not Tina's. There, I've paid my respects.

In that case that argument must presumably apply equally to you when

when a large section of the UK record buyers would disagree

So again, why are our individual feelings about the record relevant but not followups about the record's popularity in various countries?

To me the Spector version is totally overdone and over the top, trying too hard to make something new and different and dazzling. Some people feel the same way about "Good Vibrations." Given your major preference for the older sound, I would think you
might be among those who frowned on attempts to make real progressive music and get away from that older sound. Frankie C is like that, not a big fan of either record, and he was very against the late 60s and early 70s Motown sound when they went
progressive and socially conscious with things like "War" and "Cloud Nine" and the "What's Going On" album.

I'm a big fan of the down and dirty Tina records, and when they attempt to suck the grittiness out of her sound I don't like it. You saw my list of favorites, there's no pop sounding stuff there.

Because in the case of the Ike & Tina record I am voicing my (long
held) opinion that the Supremes/Temps version is a pale shadow
compared to the original which IMO is an excellent record

So once you voice your opinion nobody else as permitted to mention any other facts or opinions about the record?

That the American record buyers much preferred the Motown version is a
a matter of historical record and is of course correct----but it is
irrelevant in the fact that it has ABSOLUTELY NO BEARING on my opinion
    which remains as already stated.

To me the Spector version is totally overdone and over the top, trying too = >hard to make something new and different and dazzling.

We disagree totally on this record which I list among their best and
certainly one of the greatest of the Spector recording experiments

Some people feel the ame way about "Good Vibrations." Given your major preference

I never cared for "War" very much (I like several of Starr's other
records) but I liked "Good Vibrations" and "Cloud Nine" very much and
"What's Going On" is my #1 favorite record of 1971

I do both. But most of them did not chart.
