Carl's Wine wins the group, followed closely behind by Sunnyland Brucie and Roger Nunn. Jim's Booze takes 4thy to also advance into round 1 with the other 3 items. Unlike Mary, Poor Rick WILL be weeping after a dismal last place showing.

    ------------
I see the advantage of not having a 4th place pool this month. Jim's
record would be out if we did, but it was up against 3 very strong
records here and deserves to move on.
As for the Swan Silvertones, they're one of my favorite gospel groups,
but this record was marred by a very intrusive piano obbligato.

imo obligato is an invalid word here, the tinkling piano, intrusive as

Geoff, the word is obbligato, with two b's, and that's how I spelled it
in my post. It is unethical of you to quote my post and edit it to make

Diane, obligato has the same meaning as obbligato so I have not
said something you didn't say. I now regret removing the b but I think

The one and only other time I did this 'editing' was either harmless

    ---------
    Wikipedia explains it thusly:
    Contemporary usage
In classical music the term has fallen out of use by modern-day
practitioners, as composers, performers and audiences alike have come to
see the musical text as paramount in decisions of musical execution. As
a result, everything is now seen as obbligato unless explicitly
specified otherwise in the score. It is still used to denote an
orchestral piece with an instrumental solo part that stands out, but is
not as prominent as in a solo concerto, as in Bloch's Concerto Grosso
mentioned below. The term is now used mainly to discuss music of the
    past....
The term is also used with an entirely different meaning, signifying a countermelody.
    -----------
Note that last sentence. That is how I was using the word--the way I've
heard it used all my life.

Rick's 5R wins the group easily. Jim's Mitchell takes a 5-4 tie breaker to get second place over Mark's Candle. Crown Prince Steve eeks out 4th place by a point to move into Round 1, while Diane's and Her Fiddle are through.

Roger's Billy Stewart captures first place, with the next 3 all bunched together. Diane's Quinns in second, my Fulson third, and Mark's extremely polarizing (3 firsts, 4 lasts) Train in 4th place. Those 4 move into Round 1. Jim's Blue Jays with an

    FINAL RANKINGS

Been a long time since we had a 3 way tie, but we do today. The Spiders, Orioles and Lee Diamond each had 30 points. Here is how it resolved. Of the 9 ballots, the Spiders ranked highest among these 3 on 4 of them. The Orioles on 3 of them, and the Lee
    Diamond on 2 of them.

    1. That's The Way To Win My Heart - Spiders with Chuck Carbo - 30 (4)
    2. Dem Days (Are Gone Forever) - The Orioles - 30 (3)
    3. Mama Loochie - Lee Diamond - 30 (2)
    4. Red Headed Woman - Wayne Worley - 24

    5. Ten Cats Down - Miller Sisters - 21

Rick's Spiders win the group, with Carl's Oriole second and Diane's Diamond third. Roger's Red took 4th to also advance into the first round. Steve now has 11 cats down.

I like the song too and I have mentioned on here before that the Boone
version was my introduction to the number. It's also one of only two
Boone songs to make my 1957 favorites list getting a 6. "Love Letters
In The Sand" is the other one (and one of the best things he ever did)
    rating a 7.

(I'm tempted to add his version of "The Fat Man" to that list for
    sheer comedic value :)

think you're probably right Bruce, but I thought 'd give it a shot and see how it did. I personally like the song a lot.

Sorry, Carl. I tried hard here. I played it four times. I channeled Bugge and Pendragon, and called on my late great Aunt. Anna Bea for spiritual guidance!!
All for naught. Like the fallow follicular state of my pate, it refused to grow on me, baby!!

Boone did make SOME good records, but THIS is not one of them. I'd like to know what DIDN'T make your 1957 list that you don't think is as good as this Boone thing :-)

    DIANE WINS, SHE WINS!

Diane's EJ wins a 5-4 tie breaker over Rick's Cliques to win the group. My Impressions garnered 30 points to finish third without ANY first place rankings. 4 seconds, 4 thirds, and a 4th for 30 points. Steve's Staples took 4th place Going Away, beating
Carl's Crud by 15 points, and shooting down all the Swallows just for good measure!

OK I give. No more Pat Boone nominations. At least the comments weren't too negative, even Marks, which was entertaining. At least I set a new record I believe with 8 last place votes and 1 first place vote, mine. And I still stand by it even though I
like the Etta James and Jerry Butler (new to me) songs quite a bit.

    There's a few I expect but not many plus there's a few I didn't know

    I'll check them out
Here's my 1957 list. Anything on here that you have as a 5 or worse?

This came through on my browser as gobbledegook for some reason. Here's what I see at first glance

84 ¦ Twenty Flight Rock ¦ Eddie Cochran (if this is the US single version don't like it)
176 ¦ My Special Angel ¦ Bobby Helms
449 ¦ He's Got The Whole World in His Hands ¦ Laurie London
    486 ¦ I'm Available ¦ Margie Rayburn
488 ¦ March From The River Kwai and Colonel Bogey ¦ Mitch Miller

I still can't get my head round Jerry's "Mean Woman Blues" being soooooo low!!!!

It's the 4th best version after Elvis, Warren Phillips & the Rockets, and Orbison.

Of course not, I never even heard that version until a few years ago.

I don't agree with Bruce here. The JLL version is the only one I can
    tolerate.

Of course since Jerry Lee's is the definitive version of the number.

It's an easy 10 on my list way better than other versiions even Elvis'
    original

    Jerry Lee - 10
    Elvis - 7
Warren Philips (aka Savoy Brown) - 6
Roy Orbison - 6 (the other side and the big UK hit "Blue Bayou" is
    better a 7)
