Finally got back to this tonight.
If You Love Me - Blue Notes
Super group that made classic records in all the diffferent stages of
their lengthy career. This was the official debut with a song
originally titled "Hymn L'Amouir" by Edith Piaf and first recorded in
the English version by Vera Lynn. It's a song I like in several
versions (Kay Starr charted on both sides of the pond with a strong
pop version)
Crazy Arms - Jerry Lee Lewis
Jerry Lee's debut on wax in December 1956----and he was pretty late to
the party with this one-.Originally by Kenny Brown & Marilyn Kaye much
earlier in the year with covers coming from Ray Price (of course!)
Leon Payne,Karen Chandler & Jimmy Wakely and even a version by The
Andrews Sisters---all preceding Jerry.
One Mint Julep - Jayos
With Arthur Lee Maye on lead here's the Johnny Otis "manufactured"
group with a terrific version of the song---second only in my book to
the mighty Clovers original. Was included in the excellent Otis LP
"Rock 'N' Roll Hit Parade" on his own Dig label
Up Above My Head There's Music In The Air - Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Over here we were force fed a particularly yucky version in 1957 when
Frankie Laine and Johnnie Ray duetted their way into the British
charts with their rendering
So Strange - Five Dollars
Still remember on my first ever trip to the USA in 1968 visiting
Fortune Records in Detroit and being amazed at the THOUSANDS of old
records they still had out back in those days. Not sure if I knew this
record then but I came away with a nice bag full including one I'd
recently heard for the first time and fallen in love with---"The Wind"
by The Diablos. Thank you Devora!
Rockhouse - Roy Orbison
From Roy's second session for Sun Records in summer of 1956 which
produced both sides of his second single ("You're My Baby" being the
other track recorded). Roy Orbison (vcl/gtr) Johnny "Peanuts" Wilsoin
(gtr) James Morrow (el-mandolin) Jack Kennelly (bs) Billy Pat Ellis
(dms))
Canadian Sunset - Andy Williams
One of the better pop records of the year
Please Listen To Me - Smiley Lewis
Over here they retitled this "Don't Be That Way" to sit alongside the
Gale Storm titled that way cover (and who showed Smiley how to REALLY
sing the song!)
Shake, Rattle And Roll - Elvis
On 28 January 1956 Elvis made his debut national TV appearance on the
Dorsey Brothers' "Stage Show" on CBS where he was introduced by dee
jay Bill Randle. His first ever number on TV was a memorable version
of "Shake Rattle And Roll" that segued into "Flip Flop And Fly" near
the end.
