Never a favorite for me from his Decca stuff. OTOH the best thing he ever did pre-Crickets IMO is the first cut of "Rock Around With Ollie Vee" (from the July 1956 session). This is the take that appears on the Decca LP and on the UK Brunswick single not
to be confused with the later November take (the one with the Dutch McMillin sax)

Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins

My introduction to "Blue Suede Shoes" was in the Elvis version which I heard first. Over here they appeared as singles much closer together timewise----and both directly vied against each other for chart honors (Elvis won with #9 place in June 1956 ------
-this whilst "Heartbreak Hotel" was still climbing to #2----whilst Carl managed #10). It didn't take me long to figure which was best and Carl has ruled with this song ever since. There's some other decent versions out there but NONE compare with the
    superb Carl original

Little Girl Of Mine - Hurricanes

So-so cover but for me doesn't really compare with the Cleftones

Sweet Love On My Mind - Jimmy & Johnny

Released before the Johnny Burnette Trio version but the Trio actually recorded the song first---on 5th July 1956 compared with Jimmy & Johnny's 25th July recording date

Buchanan and Goodman On Trial - Buchanan & Goodman

Followup to "The Flying Saucer" is another pretty good "break-in" with the classic exchange between reporter "Hey! Aren't You Skinny Dynamo?" and record star "Yes it's me and I'm in love again"
("Skinny Dynamo" being the comedy name for Fats Domino first used in "The Flying Saucer". The funniest thing was that there REALLY was a "Skinny Dynamo" on record (and more than one too)--with at least one of them being Slim Saunders of "Let's Have Some
    Fun" fame in disguise

    -----------
I didn't know about Slim Saunders, but I think the other one was Vince
Monroe a/k/a Polka Dot Slim. Or did I dream that?
