Tennessee Toddy - Billy Gray
Not a song I care for that much in any version. Marty Robbins'
original gets a 6 but the others leave me pretty well unmoved.
Including the version mentioned here
I Should Have Done Right - Drifters
Previously unissued Drifters track recorded February 16 1956 with Bill
Pinkney on lead. It first surfaced on an Atco compilation set "The
Drifters : Their Greatest Recordings" in 1971
Woman Love - Gene Vincent & Blue Caps
Originally custom recorded for Starday by Jimmy Johnson in 1956. This
was under a special service offered by the record company for
customers to pay to have their own recordings pressed

Can't Help Loving That Girl Of Mine - Hide-A-Ways
Terrific Jerome Kern song from the musical "Show Boat" and rarely done
better than in this 1956 version by r&b group The Hide-A-Ways.
As an aside I also like the MGM movie version credited to Ava Gardner
(but in reality dubbed by Annette Warren). Anyone who's ever seen
"That's Entertainment Part III" wiill know that the original clip of
the the movie (with the actual Ava singing) is used and to good effect
too. They should have used that one!!
Jamaica Farewell (45 version) - Harry Belafonte
That's better!! :)
(Everytime I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone - Roy Montrell
Great cool number that was sadly missed from the 1956 Singles Battle.
Mr Montrell had some comfort tho later when his record not only won
the May 2019 Obscurities contest but went on to win the December
Champions edition of those Obscurities tournaments.
Gee,I wish I could remember who noominated that one?
Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee - Glenn Reeves
So-so version from Reeves is overshadowed in 1956 by the Johnny
Burnette Trio who have the best white version of the song IMO
But neither Reeves nor Burnette were first in the white version
stakes. This one from 1949 (on GREEN Atlantic label!) takes the
honours
Loy Gordon & His Pleasant Valley BOys

and fsecond place goes to this one from Sun Records in Memphis in 1954
Malcolm Yelvington & His Star Rhythm Boys

Love Crazy Baby - Kenny Parchman
Talking of Sun Records here's a real good one that went unreleased for
decades. "Love Crazy Baby"/"I Feel Like Rockin'" was actually assigned
a Sun catalog number- - Sun 252 - in September 1956 but the record was
pulled before any copies were pressed.
It finally saw light of day in 1985 on the Charly LP "Hop Flop & Fly"
How Come It - Thumper Jones
The almost-as-good flip of his "Rock it". Both are 8's on my list
I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent - Frankie Lymon & Teenagers
My second favorite Lymon & co single of 1956 (The first being "I
Promise To Remember") . Here the boys sync to the record in one of the
best of the 50's rock 'n' roll movies "Rock! Rock! Rock!"
