The Saints Rock 'N Roll - Bill Haley & Comets

My top Haley record of the year!! Terrific reworking of the old "When
The Saints..." number and a 9 all day long for me.. The flip is none
too shabby either---"R-O-C-K" gets an 8.

    "Crazy man crazy...crazy news!!!"

My Boy Elvis - Janis Martin

Often billed as "The Female Elvis" the rockin' Janis later had a song
dedicated to her when the Rock-A-Teens of "Woo Hoo" fame recorded
"Janis Will Rock" that was one of my nominations in a recent
    Obscurities contest

Bottle To The Baby - Charlie Feathers

Easily his best record IMO is the dynamite rockabilly double sider
"One Hand Loose"/"Bottle To The Baby" on KIng released in late 1956.

But Charlie had already reorded several versions of the song for his
previous label---Sun Records in Memphis of course. Here is what I
think is the earliest incarnation of the song probably from 1955 first
released on the LP "Rockabilly Blues" in 1985

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kGv3oxWOj8

Drown In My Own Tears - Ray Charles

Ray at his best! The definitive version of the song IMO and a sure 10.
There's also a great live cut of this song on the LP "Ray Charles In
Person" recorded in Atlanta Ga in 1959

    Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Elvis

Yes I like Lloyd Price's original (with Fats on piano) best but thats
another classic that we were deprived of here in Britain since
Specialty had no distribution deal here at the time. So my
introduction to the song was via the still excellent Elvis remake in
1956 that appeared here on his first LP as well as on a single.

Watch It Sprocket - Bobby Charles

Nice previously unreleased track from the "Chess Masters" LP in 1983
that also gave us several other "new" numbers from him including the
very good "I'll Turn Square For You"

Brown-Eyed Handsome Man - Chuck Berry

Second only to the total crime of not issuing "Maybellene" here as a
single (it would have gotten banned by the BBC anyway because of the
car brand names) was the inexcusable decision of Decca to pass on
releasing the wonderful "Too Much Monkey Business"/"Brown Eyed
Handsome Man" coupling here. No idea why.

I finally got a US Chess copy circa 1962 when the glorious London
Transat import shop opened here (that much later we tried to base
Moondog's Record Store on)-- and of course the song itself graced our
Top 20 not long afterwards in the shape of the resurrected Buddy Holly
    version

A Thousand Miles Away - Heartbeats

It was well into the 60's when I finally caught up with this classic.

Previously I'd only been familar with the number in its "Daddy's Home" reincarnatiion as by Shep & The Limelites which was (and still is) one
of my favorite records of 1961

After The Lights Go Down Low - Al Hibbler

First recorded for the Original label in 1955 then the hit version for
Decca in 1956. Hibbler goes into competition on this one with Della
Reese ("And That Reminds Me") and Dick Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins" for
the title of worst imitation of an English accent :)

Drinkin' Wine Spodee-O-Dee - Johnny Burnette Trio

The original UK 10" Rock 'N' Roll Trio LP (that includes the above
track) now routinely fetches four figure sums on the rare occasions it
appears on eBay and other sales outlets over here

Crazy, Crazy Lovin' - Johnny Carroll

Johnny Carrroll & The Hot Rocks were a highspot of the lowest of low
budgets rock 'n' roll movie "Rock Baby Rock It" filmed in Memphis in
1957. Here's this song as featured in that movie :-

I like the live version even better than the studio one. Both are truly great.

I just give the edge to the studio cut but yes both are truly great I
    agree.

For sake of clarity the live concert was in May 1959. The live album
    was released in July 1960

Never knew about this. Interesting to know about, but not a track I would file in my library. Glad he continued to work on the song and where it finally got to.

Did not know about that one either, just grabbed it for the library.

It's very good, but not great. I prefer the Lula Reed original. Ray should have ditched the background singers.
