    Eugene Thomas Facenda
    November 10, 1939 - November 18, 2022

    Eugene Thomas Facenda passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Friday, November 18, 2022. He was born in Portsmouth, VA on November 10, 1939 to the late Emelia T. and Olive R. Facenda.

    After graduating from St. Paul's High School in 1957, he joined Gene Vincent's Blue Caps as a backup vocalist. In 1959 he began a solo career, writing and recording the hit “High School U.S.A.”

    After joining the Army National Guard in the early 1960s, Eugene worked for the Portsmouth Fire Department, from which he retired. He later worked part-time security for Sentara Norfolk General.

    In 2012, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him as a member of the Blue Caps and the city of Portsmouth added the Honorary Tommy Facenda Street.

    Eugene is predeceased by his sister Verna F. Bradshaw and his son Tommy E. Facenda. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia G. Facenda; daughters Gina C. Facenda and Angela F. Klecka; grandchildren Zachary F. Klecka and Holly K. Monell; and five great-
    grandchildren.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 1st, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 2nd, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High St.,
    Portsmouth.

    Per his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
