• Rock Stars & Their Strange Gurus

From Norbert K@21:1/5 to All on Sun Oct 31 09:27:16 2021
    1. The Beatles famously followed the Maharishi for a time, with Paul and Ringo the first to go, and Lennon and Harrison leaving when they caught him making a pass at a female disciple.

Lennon seemed to have been forever caught in a quest for a mystical-minded leader. Magic Alex, Arthur Janov, and Sai Baba are examples. Lennon also followed the prescriptions of some of Yoko's occult gurus, including tarot card reader John Green,
numerologist Takashi Yoshikawa, santeria specialist Joseph Lukach, and others. Yoko herself was a guru to John; he admitted in interviews that he was the Carlos Castenada to Yoko's Don Juan.

    2. Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys was a disciple of the Maharishi, and, for a time, a follower of Charles Manson. He recognized at some point that the relationship with Manson was something he needed to escape -- and crept out of his Santa Monica home
in the night, leaving it for a time to Manson & his followers, who turned it into a cockroach-ridden filth-fest.

    3. Pete Townshend was (and perhaps is) a follower of Meher Baba. i don't know much about this character aside from a quote of his ("Desire nothing and you will have everything") that Townshend included in the notes of his Empty Glass album.

    4. Peter Gabriel was a follower of Ira Einhorn -- who has been notorious for decades as the murderer of his girlfriend Holly Maddux. Gabriel was also a follower of the late psychiatrist R.D. Laing. in the late 1960s, Laing received a visit from a
journalist named Albert Goldman, whose account of their visit disputed Laing's own claims of therapeutic success and actually gave the impression that Laing himself was a disturbed individual.

Can anyone think of any other such rock star & guru relationships?

Well, I came up with several others:

    Brian Wilson & Eugene Landy.

Jimmy Page and Aleistair Crowley. They didn't actually meet, but Page was sufficiently obsessed with Crowley to purchase the castle Crowley once owned and keep it for several decades.

David Cassidy and Elliot Mintz. Cassidy once stated that "Elliot Mintz is my Yoda." (Yoda is green, not red!)

Jimmy Page, again, and William Burroughs. A lot of other rock stars, including Patti Smith, Kurt Cobain, and the guys in Husker Du venerated Burroughs. Pete Townshend was a voice of dissent; he said, "A lot of heroin's effects are irreversible, as you
can tell by reading Burroughs. Page one, crap. Page two, crap."

Leonard Cohen had some sort of Zen master guru. At least he didn't preach about it AFAIK.
