"He wasn't a great musician, but he was a great man."
What do people think of this, now that decades have passed since its
utterance?
I liked and respected George Martin, but I think he got it almost
backwards in this quote about Lennon. I'd say John "Wasn't a great man,
but he was a great songwriter when he had the right help."
The pre-LSD, pre-Yoko John became a great songwriter very quickly -- but
he had the help of McCartney, the other Beatles, Geoff Emerick and
George Martin. He was prone to violent outbursts, however, which
detracts from his greatness as a person (anyone disagree?).
The post-"eating acid like candy," Ono-promoting Lennon was often
wretched in his songwriting; and contemptible as far as his
susceptibility to Yoko's manipulations. She was merely using him and
and was not even faithful as a wife (to John) or a mother (to little
Sean).
