The Cars' debut album was recorded at AIR Studio in London, which
producer George Martin founded. Cars guitarist Elliot Easton remembered
a visit from the legendary producer when they were recording "My Best
Friend's Girl." "George Martin came by the control booth periodically
and stretched out on the sofa," Easton said. "One time, during a
playback, he said, 'That's not too bad, actually.' High praise from
him."
Years later, Easton admitted that the Beatles were his inspiration for
the song's conic solo. "The inspiration for my rockabilly riff and solo
was the guitar lick from the Beatles' "I Will," Easton revealed. "I
mutated it a bit to counter Ric's strong eighth-note feel."

Easton's "rockbilly riff" in "My Best Friend's Girl" is obviously
similar to the one in "I Will," but the solo?
