Lennon asked Tim [Leary] what he could do to help him run for governor
[of California -- yeah, right]. Tim told Lennon he could write a
campaign song for him. Lennon asked what the theme should be. Tim told
him his campaign slogan was "Come Together, Join the Party." "Great
title," Lennon replied. Grabbing his guitar, he started improvising.
"Come together/Right now/Don't come tomorrow/Don't come alone/Come together/Right Now/Over me/All that I can tell you is/You gotta be
free." After fooling around with a few more verses, Lennon sang the
song through and handed Tim the tape. Seven months later, the Beatles
released a somewhat altered version of the song.
