I know this will sound wierd, but is there a possibility there is a reason behind it? To stop conversation on some topic? I don't know about the other boards, but the spamming has almost stopped on rmd...

The only reason the spammers spam is that it's easy, it costs them
nothing, and there's a slight possibility that they may catch a fish in
their scam trap. The wider they cast, the better their chances. All it
takes is one person to take the bait to make it all worthwhile for
    them.

People have been proposing ways around the spamming. I'll try at
least some of them before I give up on the board.

Starring some good conversations, and then defaulting to "Starred conversations" in Google works.

If you keep using Google Groups, there's really no defense, since they
offer no filtering capability and they themselves are the primary
source of the spam. The best solution is to use a "real" newsreader
that allows you to create filters/killfiles and to use a "real" Usenet
service that also tries to filter out spam.
