    Book Information
"Lewis Smedes writes about forgiveness like no one has ever written about it before. There is no better book in the English language about this subject, which, if properly mastered, can change the face of human relationships."
    --Neil Clark Warren

Author of The Triumphant Marriage and Make Anger Your Ally

If you are ready to make peace with those who have hurt or betrayed you, there can be no finer road map than this thoroughly practical book. Lewis Smedes brings true forgiveness, "Gods own gift," within the capacity of every wounded person, even in
circumstances when only hate seems possible. With inspiring words, he leads you through the three stages of forgiveness and helps you understand:

Why we forgive (often the person who benefits most is the forgiver)
What we do when we forgive (perhaps not what we expect)
Whom we forgive (only those who directly wrong us)
How we forgive (we start by owning our pain)

Using many dramatic examples drawn from life, this wise author illuminates, step by step, the healing path to peace and freedom.

"Altogether a wonderfully wise and enabling book, one of Smedes's very best. The Art of Forgiving is itself a work of art. Throughout my reading I found myself exclaiming, 'That never occurred to me, but yes, that's right!' I felt as if I were being led
by an extraordinarily lucid and perceptive guide on a tour through the land of forgiveness."
    --Nicholas Woltersdorff
    Professor of Philosophical Theology

When a heinous act is committed, sometimes one wonders if forgiveness is even possible. Lewis B. Smedes would certainly advise it. "When we forgive," he says, "we set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner we set free is us." In an easy-to-read
yet astute analysis of the meaning and value of forgiveness, Smedes teaches the reader that more than anything, forgiveness is a way of healing. He takes as his model the Judeo-Christian God and outlines the many subtleties involved in forgiveness, such
as distinguishing anger from hate, and noting that we only forgive those we blame (including ourselves). Forgetting may be more difficult, but at least The Art of Forgiving can help us along the path toward release and healing.

Title: Authoritative claims require authoritative references
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2022
Review: Beware any text that tells you exactly the things that you want to hear. As I've learned to discern God's voice, I know it first by knowing what it isn't. And it almost always isn't the thing I want to hear, or an echo of my own, human attitudes.
That was my first red flag while reading the introductory chapters of this book. The author made claims that aligned with what my human nature wanted to hear. Claims that made me feel justified. Claims that made me feel I was right. Big warning signs.

The second, and biggest problem with the entire book is that the author makes dozens of authoritative claims without presenting a single shred of supporting scripture or references to relevant work to back them up. Until about 120 pages into the 192 page
text, the author only quotes two partial verses, out of context, and only in passing, not as part of evidence for his case. And scant mention of Jesus, what he had to say about the topic, and his part in biblical forgiveness. This is a fatal flaw of this
    book.

In chapter 14: "How God Forgives", the author makes his first and biggest attempt to tie his claims to a biblical story, and fails horribly. He presents the parable of the prodigal son as an illustration of how God forgives according to the AUTHOR's
pattern. What did the father forgive the prodigal son for? Author gives an extra-biblical explanation without citing any sources for it. When did the father forgive the prodigal son? Author supposes when it might have happened but gives no supporting
proof. Because he can't. Why did the father forgive the prodigal son? Author gives his own opinion without citing supporting work. Then, because his editor probably read his book the same way I did and came to him saying, "You really need to include
references to scripture in a book claiming to be about the biblical approach to forgiveness.", the author includes a half dozen chapter and verse references without explanation within the span of a single page. And that's the last time he quotes any
scripture until the end of the book on page 192.

I picked this book at the recommendation of a respected theologian whose work is deeply rooted in scripture, and as such I am deeply disappointed. I read the book as part of a study of the biblical pattern of forgiveness, which included listening to
hours of sermons, a dozen or so writings by other theologians, and a week's worth of study on what the Bible has to say on the topic. After that study, I still have a difficult time reconciling the author's claims to biblical source.

The book comes off as a me-centered approach to forgiveness. As an exercise in self-help. Given the intended Christian audience, the author would have done better to begin with an examination of how God forgives from a biblical perspective, not his own,
and then introduced some of his concepts but with supporting material from the Bible. I will say that while there was one or two decent insights that I was able to take away from the book, it wasn't without hard examination against scripture to determine
their validity. I would not expect a casual reader without a knowledge of the Bible to come to those conclusions.

I bought a hard copy of this book with the intent of passing it on because of all the great reviews, but I can't in good conscience do that lest anyone be misled. If you're looking for feel-good theology, then read it. Otherwise there are far better
    sources.

Title: DEVOUR this book and DON'T WASTE another moment of your LIFE!!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2021
Review: I have never read such a comprehensive and well-written guide to grieving and releasing hurts and offenses that require forgiveness as when I picked up this AWESOME FIND!! The process that true healing takes far exceeds the time and energy needed
to dig into this easy-read, but TAKE that TIME and do not seek to rush it. There could be no greater effort you make for your own sense of peace and well-being than to work out your pain and personal hurt, give it to the Lord, and restore joy to your
soul, attitude, aspect, and life!! Hallelujah for this man who has the courage and clarity to define true, Biblical forgiveness in a world that tries to suggest a very different and damaging definition and process (e.g., "forgive and forget", "time heals
all wounds", "shake it off", etc.) Whatever the offense or degree of hurt, it matters to God and should not be overlooked...that only leads to bitterness and living a lie! There is no blessing or healing for the embittered person who "drinks the poison
daily, expecting their offender to die"! Thank you, Mr. Smedes, for helping a hurting world in this way!!!

Title: Christian centric book with important points for those of all faiths Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2018
Review: Definitely the author is a Christian. But, the book explores facets that I thought were under examined and practical for those of all faiths. For instance, does forgiving someone equal reuniting with them of you can't change their behavior? I
would have loved for the author to discuss more of what the relationship looks like when you are stuck with people you want to forgive but are stuck in a relationship with (in-laws might bee a great ). That's really about the only thing that is missing.
The examples of WHY you want to forgive are so important, what you forgive, and how you forgive might be shocking to many who believe true Cheistian forgiveness is about public displays and worlds rather than actions. I read this through in one afternoon
    - I couldn't put out down. I know I will re-read as often as I need.

Review: It was time for me to forgive a 55-year-old hurt - but even with all of the spiritual help I had in my life, I didn't know how. This book taught me how. I want to buy more just to have on the shelf, to share with others who are hurting and don't
know how to forgive. This is not just a "feel good" read. This is a step-by-step instruction manual. Don't hesitate. Get it.

Review: I enjoyed the book but for me it was a very slow start and didn't really get in-depth to what I needed until the back end of the book. I got so much more out of Ken Sande's The Peacemaker which I think should be required reading! But sadly won't
be allowed in schools because of the Biblical references.

done with authenticity and integrity, and not after a long time has passed.

Title: Great tool, giving great insight into the realm of forgiveness
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2014
Review: I gave this book 5 stars because it really helped me to understand better what it means to forgive. Forgiveness is more than saying sorry and true forgiveness is a process. The part that really sticks with me is that forgiveness is found when we
rediscover the humanity in the person that hurt us. It was also helpful to learn the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation and that forgiveness doesn't mean we go back to what we had, but that we can move forward to new things, new
    relationships.

A very good book, easy to read in a week, but one that will take a life time to really grasp and put into practice.
