• William F. Buckley on John's "More Popular Than Jesus" Comment

From Norbert K@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 12 04:10:15 2023
"Reaction to his statement appeared to be based on the assumption that Mr. Lennon was comparing not the relative popularity of himself and Jesus but their related virtues. And this is, of course, to miscomprehend what Mr. Lennon said, which was
certainly untactful and indubitably accurate. Mr. Lennon's rather course ejaculation was to be sure the plain truth, hardly shocking to students of the Bible, who know the relative attractions of Mammon over God."

This is basically a more long-winded version of how Lennon tried to defend his assertion, except that Buckley is more insistent on its accuracy.

I wish someone like Buckley were around today to comment on what has happened to the Republican Party and today's so-called conservatives. None of it would have been imaginable in Buckley's time -- or even ten years ago.

There has been a shift. Can you imagine Eisenhower, Nixon, or even Reagan kissing the asses of Kim Jong Un and Putin, while promoting infantile, moronic garbage like Q-Anon?

Of course John was more popular than any imaginary character!

The Beatles made music go years forward! from one moment to another,
something that few achieved in music or anything else..

Yes, I think that Buckley and most of the other Beatles critics of 1964 assumed that they were a flash-in-the-pan. They had no sense of the guys' ingenuity and desire to innovate and evolve.
