Toppermost of the Poppermost today in 1964, celebrating long-desired American chart success.

This was following The Beatles' first two shows at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, France. Plagued by power cuts and a backstage fight involving press photographers, the second of these generated a lukewarm reception from the largely adult audience. Yet,
the Fab Four could care less after returning to the Hotel George V.

"A telegram came through to Brian from Capitol Records of America," Paul would recall. "He came running into the room saying, 'Hey, look. You are number one in America!' I Want to Hold Your Hand had gone to number one."
"We went out to dinner that evening with Brian and George Martin," the other George added. "George took us to a place which was a vault, with huge barrels of wine around. It was a restaurant and its theme was... well, the bread rolls were shaped like
penises, the soup was served out of chamber pots and the chocolate ice cream was like a big turd. And the waiter came 'round and tied garters on all the girls' legs."

George Martin's girlfriend Judy Lockhart-Smith was also at the Au Mouton de Panurge restaurant to see an elated Brian put one of the chamber pots on his head. This was the man who, a couple of years earlier, had predicted The Beatles would be bigger than
Elvis. Now they were ready to conquer The King's country.

Sounds like George had little appreciation of haute cuisine.
