I assume many here know about the band Klaatu, and how they were thought
to maybe be The Beatles incognito with their album 3:47 EST released in
    1976.

Well they weren't The Beatles, or any individual Beatle, but a Canadian
group who were very scant on details (names, recording details, etc) on
    the album sleeve.

My question is did they deliberately set out to sound Beatlish ? The
music, the style of (most of) the songs themselves, the instrumentation choices, and John Woloschuk's vocals sound ***so*** Paul , especially on 'Sub-Rosa Subway'.

Anybody else with thouhts on this.

And if you haven't listened, then you may enjoy it. It is on Spotify....

When I was a kid, I had this book about the Beatles that addressed not just the facts about the band, but various silly rumors about them, such as "Paul is Dead" and "Klaatu are the Beatles, secretly reunited." The author devoted a paragraph or two to
that second one, and then concluded, "The Beatles would never have penned such extraterresstrial pap as 'Anus of Uranus.'"

I wish I had not lost the book. It may have been The Beatles Forever by Nicholas Schaffner.

I don't think so. In my opinion only *two* Klaatu songs sound
"beatlish", "Sub-Rosa Subway" and "Calling Occupants of Interplanetry
Craft" (which was later covered by the Carpenters), and probably just by coincidence. The other songs of the first album and all songs of the
second album "Hope" sound very different.

    Try listening again.

    - Calling Occupants.... - very much.
    - California Jam - very much.
    - Anus Of Uranus - not much.
    - Sub-Rosa Subway - very much.
    - True Life Hero - lead vocal not at all, backing vocals and backing
    track very much.
    Doctor Marvello - very much.
    - Sir Bodsworth Ruggelsby III - very much.
    - Little Neutrino - many similarities in style especially the
orchestration and synth experimentation of the era.

In particular the tracks Macca and JL sounding voices

It was only during the period of the first album that the speculation
    was out there.

The Beatles certainly did have more of a sense of humour than the author (Schaffner ?) appears to have ...

And what did he make of the likes of Why Don't We Do It In The Road ?

I was just quoting that particular book. Yes, the Beatles did plenty of silly songs. I read in an old issue of Rolling Stone that John and Yoko were planning on having a "UFO" constructed from which they would give concerts. (Would such a contraption
really be a UFO?) Also, May Pang's account of her and John's "UFO" sighting implies that John believed he was viewing a craft piloted by beings from another planet. I *wouldn't* have put it past him to write a song about such a subject.
