In 1974, Charles Berlitz published a book called The Bermuda Triangle. This was an area of the ocean, he claimed, that mysteriously swallowed ships and planes.
The book was spectacularly successful and Berlitz's idea pervaded popular culture, inspiring movies and documentaries. I was in grade school at the time and my friends and I were titillated by the notion of such a mysterious and dangerous force. The TV
series In Search Of, which was hosted by Leonard Nimoy, did a segment on the alleged phenomenon.
Charles Berlitz was the grandson of the founder of the Berlitz Language School. I've read that John Lennon had worked on his Japanese speaking skills at one of the school's branches.
