"'Four and Twenty Hours' sounds like a Christmas song that has come out early...way too early. I knew it was the Ivy League because I could hear the singer's nose scraping against the mic."

Entwistle was always funny and ungenerous with his praise.

    Yes, that was hysterical.

He should be the one to talk about noses !

And in the end it was his nose that was his undoing ;- (

They didn't merely lose a big & rather aristocratic nose when Entwistle died; they lost an essential part of their sound. Good as Pino Palladino is, he doesn't move the music along as Entwistle did.

All sorts of stories about Entwistle came out after his death, but I -- in spite of all the drug fans I've been acquainted with -- would never have guessed he was seriously into coke. He seemed mellow and humorous in a sardonic sort of way.

I don't think he had been for some time, and maybe 'out of practice'
which was the problem. Possibly thought he needed some sort of booster
for the upcoming tour, and it was all too much for his older constitution.

No kidding. It's also unfortunate that his continued development as a bassist though the 80s & 90s was not documented on Who albums.

"We insisted that in the Schlitz commercial from the 1982 tour, at no point did it say we drank Schlitz beer. I've never drunk a glass of beer in my life. I had a sip once as a kid, and it was shit. But if someone wants me to sponsor Remy-Martin, I'll
jump on it. I feel I still have my integrity. When I tour, it costs me money, and I don't give a fuck if it comes from Schlitz. It enables me to play."

I don't understand the attraction of Bud Lite or Coors -- oh, wait, I do. It's what rednecks drink to announce their redneckhood. What little flavor it has is bad.

Whatever Entwistle tasted as a kid in Chiswick in the 50s was probably much better as far as techniques and ingredients than American Budweiser. Maybe he was too young. Maybe beer, even decent British ale, wasn't for him.

But one could be excused for not being so enthusiastic about mainstream American beer.

People who think they don't like beer have usually only sampled bad ones.

An on-topic observation about John Entwistle: Paul McCartney is the only other bass player for whom he has ever had a kind word. I read an interview in which he was asked for his thoughts on Jack Bruce; "I never much liked his sound," Entwistle said.
How about Billy Sheehan? "He's a nice bloke" (how's that for damning with faint praise?). Was Entwistle influenced by James Jamerson? "Not really, because he was a proper bassist and I never considered myself a proper bassist." What did Entwistle
make of the pop & slap bass style? "I'm bored stiff with it."

However: "McCartney, not so much technically, but the way he actually composes his parts is really good."
