Lennon famously went through several months of primal therapy with its inventor Arthur Janov. His Plastic Ono Band album of 1970 is widely regarded as his "primal scream" album, and Lennon's references to Janov in interviews suggest that the therapy
remained a preoccupation till the end.
Albert Goldman accurately describes Janov & his practice as follows:
"Janov built up from this experience [of watching a young patient regress to infancy and scream for his 'Mommy' and 'Daddy'] a theory and practice that he was convinced would revolutionize the whole profession of mental health. He believed that if
he could trip a patient back to his early childhood and make him scream forth the pain he had experienced when his needs were not fulfilled, all the distorting and deadening defenses that the patient had subsequently built up to avoid feeling this
original pain would be blown away and a new man would start forth, free again to feel the grief and bliss of life."
Was Lennon a free and new man again following his time with Janov?
