"Hours later, when the [Berkeley student] demonstrators had gone home to watch themselves on the six-o'clock news, and the Blue Meanies had checked in their flak jackets and gas masks for the day, William Beall, chief of the campus police, returned to
his office to plan the next day's defensive. Ever since the People's Park uprising in May, he had been requisitioning sophisticated riot gear, and tonight his mind was on the new gas grenades that could be ejected through the exhaust system of a police
vehicle, which his men fondly referred to as "Puff, the Magic Dragon."
