Anybody here familiar with the Great American Songbook?
Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, etc;
a/k/a piano bar songs
I love that stuff. Part of the attraction is their flexibility,
they can be interpreted so many ways. All the top singers
have done albums.
They're popular on jazz stations, which is most of my
listening these days. Yesterday, I heard "The hunter gets
captured..." with female voice. Beautiful. I thought,
dang, that Garcia song belongs in the song book canon.
It reminds me of "Smoke gets in your eyes", for no
apparent reason -
So then I looked it up, and holy moly, it's a Smokey
Robinson composition, Master of Soul! How many of
you knew that? Then I Youtubed the original, by
the Marvelettes... holy moly, talk about flexibility!
So now we're on this topic, discuss: which Dead songs
belong to that tradition? You might respond, they
wrote a ton of great songs! hmmmm... GDead and
'piano bar' aren't usually winners in the word association game -

Yep, Jerry had good, intricate musical tastes 👅 a fact sometimes lost on the Touchhead masses…
