Circa 1959-60 somebody recorded a song called "Julie Anne." One of
those griping betrayal ditties with a teen car-crash kind of ending
(she's eaten by a bear). I can only find two sites on the web that
even reference it (lyrics only), no artist info. Melody line was
similar to "Wayfaring Stranger." Anybody recall the tune and the
    artist(s)?

    A few lyrics:

The shady side of Sunny Mountain
(or "sunny side of Shady Mountain," both listed)
That's the way it all began
There once lived the fairest maiden
And her name was Julie Anne

Julie's beau was tall and handsome
Just a poor boy with treasures few
But he promised rings of silver
Just to prove his love was true

    chorus:

Have you seen her in the moonlight
    Silver rings upon her hands
Now she wears a crown of sorrow
And her name is Julie Anne

    Thanks!

This song is a lot older than the Christie Minstrel's version. It was recorded in the 1950's by a folksinger who's name I can't remember. Have been looking for it for years. And it's not a song about a teen car crash. It's a mountain song--- I'll see if
    I can remember all the lyrics;

    Julie Anne

    Shady side of sunny mountain
Was the place it all began
For there lived a fair young maiden
    And her name was Julieanne

Julie's beau was strong and handsome
Just a poor boy with treasures few
Said he I'll go, on to that mountain
And bring it's treasures back to you

Off he rode into that valley
When the fields were wet with dew
    But instead, he went a'ramblin'
    He went a'courtin' Jenny Lou

    Ch:
Oh you can see her in the moonlight her in the moonlight
    Silver rings upon her hands
But she wears a crown of sorrow
And her name is Julie Anne

The cabin door was standin' open
On that wild and windy night
And the hound dog lay a dying
    in the gloomy candlelight

On the floor, the empty rifle
And the shawl she used to wear
But they never found Miss Julie
They never found, that hungry bear

    Ch:
Oh you can see her in the moonlight her in the moonlight
    Silver rings upon her hands
But she wears a crown of sorrow
And her name is Julie Anne

    Hope that's helpful!

I remember the second verse as:
Julie's beau was strong and handsome
Just a poor boy with treasures few
But he promised rings of silver
Just to prove his love was true.
