To me, the only really acceptable samson is the Luccioni. But, actually acceptable is the wrong word--and, as far as I am concerned, Luccioni is easily the star. As far as other Samsons are concerned, I would say that the Vickers is a complete disaster--he is simply no Samson, and sounds as if he is
singing into a bottle. The first Domingo is among his more acceptable recordings (I have never heard his later version or versions), and vastly superior to the Vickers. I happen to enjoy the Carreras--but that's because I have a weak spot for him. To be honest, he is no Samson either.
We really have to return to the Luccioni, and to individual arias recorded by the likes of Gilion, Paoli and Vezzani.
Three cheers for tenors with voice, voice, voice--who can dominate the rest of
the cast, chorus and orchestra.
