I found it -- it's La Boheme, end of Act 2. But the context, of
course, is comic, not tragic, so I had misremembered that.
And in the four different Youtube videos I watched, the scene is
over in a minute or so, not the drawn out sequence I had remembered.

As for the Gounod, I noticed that the middle part of the chorus
sounds like a Sousa march I remembered from long ago. Now I've got
to get busy and locate that march...
